Tips for Keeping Active and Staying in Touch
According to the 2011 Census, there was 392,000 households in Ireland with only one person living in them and the numbers are growing. In the case of many older people in single households many people will often have some kind of home help, companion care or a private home care service. Whatever the situation we would like to share some ideas for keeping active and staying in touch.
Keep in Touch – As we get older, for a variety of reasons we may not be as good as we used to be at staying in contact with friends and relatives but, today, especially with the introduction of technology to the world, you don’t have to be distant and all it takes to get started is a simple message. Even if your friends or family live on the other side of the planet, you are only a Skype call away!
Stay Active – If you can get out and about, nearby, you’re almost guaranteed to find book clubs, volunteering opportunities, bridge or card games, and various other resources like Men’s Shed and your local Active Retirement group. Your Personal Home Care assistant can help you find a class or hobby you can do and support you in getting to and from the venue if needed?
Keep it Simple – Just getting out of the house and spending time around other people can be revitalising; even something easy like going shopping or paying a visit to the library.
Talk to Neighbours – If you’ve never had a conversation with the neighbours, now is as good a time as any to do it. Even if it starts with a simple conversation over the wall who knows what great friendships and mutual supports can start with a simple friendly hello.
Find People with Common Interests – Finally, think about your passions and find people who feel the same way whether it’s cooking, gardening, motorcycles, chess, exercise, or anything else. Group meet-ups is a great place to start – have a look joining a group meet-ups, for example www.meetup.com, on this website if they don’t have a group you like you they have the facility for you to start your own.
